He was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1955 and served for two years of active duty at the Arctic Test Branch in Alaska. After his discharge, he spent four years in the Army Reserves.
Dick spent 31 years working in Property Tax Administration and Valuation. Two of those years were for the City of Eau Claire and twenty-nine were for the State of Wisconsin. He retired from State service in 1991. During his working years he spent countless weekends and evenings teaching Law and Administration courses at various Technical Colleges throughout Northern Wisconsin. He was a member of the Appraisal Institute Society of Real Estate Appraisers, International Assessors Association, and Indianhead Assessors Association. He dearly loved his work and the people he worked with throughout the many years.
