Paul Wiegner Obituary

Paul Edward Wiegner of Eau Claire passed away on January 18, 2026 at Mayo Hospital.

He was born August 6, 1946 in Oshkosh to Rev. Robert and Helen (Johnson) Wiegner.  The family moved to Eau Claire when he was 6 years old.  He graduated from Memorial High in 1964. He earned a degree in history at UWEC.  He then joined the Army and was stationed in Heidelberg, Germany as a chaplain’s assistant. On leaving the Army, he remained in Heidelberg to attend university for two years.  He spent another year teaching history in Berlin in a school for GI kids.  He formed lifelong friendships in Heidelberg.

On returning to Eau Claire, he became involved in environmental issues with Northern Thunder. They started a recycling project which became Western Dairyland Recycling. He managed the recycling center until he joined the Wisconsin DNR as a recycling and solid waste specialist.

Paul always loved traveling the world.  When he married Susan Peterson in 1987, they continued to travel. They participated in the International Student Host Family Program at UWEC where they met many wonderful young people with whom they are still in contact. They also hosted a high school student from Germany for a year. He is still family.

Paul was the beloved uncle of many nieces and nephews.  When they were in high school, Paul and Sue took them on trips to Mexico and Europe.  Such fun times!

Whenever he went to Europe it was reunion time with his Heidelberg friends.  His humor and stories will be greatly missed by all.

He was preceded in death by his parents.  He is survived by his wife Sue, his brothers Douglas (Luzette) of Palm Bay, FL and James (Sara) of Ephrata, PA.

A celebration of Paul’s life will be held at a later date.  Condolences may be sent to www.hulkefamilyfh.com.
