Michael J. Berg

Michael John Berg, 77, passed away on January 12, 2026, in Eau Claire, Wisconsin. 

Mike was born on July 31, 1948, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, to Joseph and Lois (Brandes) Berg. At a young age, his family moved to Eau Claire, where he grew up and ultimately made his lifelong home. Mike attended the University of Wisconsin–Madison, earning a degree in Civil Engineering, and went on to dedicate his entire 45-year career to Ayres Associates as a structural engineer.

Mike married Mary Klopp in 1973, and together they raised two children, Joshua and Kendra. As a family they shared a love of adventure, spending summers on camping road trips across many states and Canada, and winters skiing together. An avid skier, Mike worked on the ski patrol during college and later taught both of his children to ski. Along with his brothers and friends, he helped form the Minturn Milers, an annual ski trip that spanned more than 35 years and took the group as far as Italy and Switzerland.

Mike could regularly be found golfing at the Eau Claire Golf & Country Club, a place he was very fond of.  As a skilled golfer, he enjoyed the competition of golf, but even more the camaraderie of friends and family.  This was always evident with the “Berg Closed” – the family golf tournament started by his father, that he had helped continue.  This past fall, the 57th Berg Closed was held, won by his daughter, Kendra.

After retiring, Mike and Mary traveled extensively, enjoying riverboat cruises through Europe and spending winter months in Manzanillo, Mexico, where they cherished time with their friends. Mike will be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather, and a loyal friend to many.

Mike is survived by his wife Mary; his son Joshua (Katie), and daughter Kendra (John) Goodman; Grandchildren, Luca Goodman, Charlie Berg, Mara Goodman, and Everly Berg; Brothers, Steve (Louise), Jeff (Debbie), Brad (Valerie); Father-in-law, Duane Klopp; Sister-in-law, Jean (John) Lippert; Brother-in-law, Dale Klopp; along with many cousins, nieces, and nephews.

Memorial services for Mike will take place on Monday, January 19, 2026 at 11:30 a.m. with a visitation to begin at 10:00 a.m. at St. Matthew Lutheran Church, 1915 Hogeboom Ave, Eau Claire, WI 54701, with Pastor James Bruss officiating. Private family burial will take place at a later date.
