Melvin L. Crooks

Melvin L. Crooks, “Mel”, 86, of Eau Claire, WI,  passed away on September 13, 2024. Mel was born on December 12, 1937, in Chicago, IL to the late Samuel and Della Draves Crooks.

He was a graduate of Southern Illinois University, with a bachelor's degree from the School of Design. Mel’s passion for art and creativity led him to pursue many entrepreneurial endeavors.

His family spent several summers of his childhood up in Eagle River, Wisconsin, where Mel became an avid fisherman. From his time in Eagle River, he developed a love for the Northwoods. So much so that over the years he built, rented, and lived in log cabins. As an entrepreneur, he established a woodworking business, held a fishing trademark, assembled, and had a patent for his specially designed geodesic domes, and he acquired a 1950 Mercury, which was his favorite classic car. Mel always had a positive attitude and made many cherished memories with his children and grandchildren.

Mel is survived by his three children, David (Cynthia) Crooks, Annandale, VA, Carmel (Rod) Rhoda, Normal, IL, Cathy (Chris) Moos, Eau Claire, WI; grandchildren, Michael Rhoda, Caroline Rhoda, Ellie Rhoda, Caleb (Ashley) Moos, and Connor Moos, and several nieces and nephews.

Mel was preceded in death by Carolyn Peterson Crooks, his wife of 32 years, and Marilyn Berg Crooks, his wife of 17 years; as well as his sister, Marilyn Deval & brother in law Arthur Deval, and his sister, Donna Sawmiller Cox & brother in law, Darrell Sawmiller.

There will be a visitation at the church on Saturday from 2 pm until the time of service. A Celebration of Life remembrance ceremony will be held on October 26th, 3:00 PM at Chippewa Valley Church, Eau Claire, WI.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Chippewa Valley Church - benevolent fund or Eau Claire County Meals on Wheels.
