Galen Betsinger Obituary

Galen Ward Betsinger, 88, passed away peacefully at home on July 28, 2025 in Altoona, Wisconsin. A man of deep integrity and unwavering devotion to his family, Galen lived a life marked by service, leadership, and love.

Born on June 23,1937 in Winona, Minnesota, Galen was the son of Warren and Signa Betsinger. He graduated from Rushford High School in 1955 and went on to earn both his Bachelor of Science (1963) and Master of Science (1971) degrees from Winona State University. His commitment to education would become a defining theme throughout his life.

Galen proudly served his country for 27 years in the United States Air Force. His military career included eleven years active duty, and continued with service in the Air National Guard 148th Fighter Wing in Duluth, MN. He retired at the rank of Major in 1982. His dedication to duty and country was matched only by his commitment to shaping young minds and guiding future generations.

Following his military service, Galen had a distinguished career in education. He began as a high school English teacher before transitioning into roles as a guidance counselor, assistant principal, and high school principal. His leadership culminated in his position as Director of Curriculum for the Eau Claire School District. In each role, Galen brought compassion, wisdom, and an unshakable belief in the potential of every student.

Galen was a devoted husband to Janice. They married on June 18, 1960 in Winona, MN and recently celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary. Together they built a life centered around love, support, and encouragement. This legacy lives on through their children: Geoffrey Betsinger (Stephanie), Susan Grohn (Bruce), Gail Good (Rick), and Joel Betsinger (Kelli). Galen’s pride in his family was undeniably evident, and he cherished each moment spent with them.

He was a beloved grandfather to Breana (Mike), Kaitlyn, Bradley (Kristine), Abbye (Treynor); Cora (Hannes), Hannah (Tim), Emma; Jalen (Caitlin),  Noah; Zachary (Eliana), John; and a great grandfather to Jasper, Cove, Clementine, Jude; Blakeley, Kaysen, Kashton; Levi, Finley; Wren; Ronan; and another great grandchild due in February. Despite the size of his family tree, Galen had an extraordinary ability to make each person feel uniquely loved and valued.

Galen is also survived by his brothers Gene Betsinger and Gary (Judy) Betsinger, sister-in-laws Donna Tetzlaff, Diane Bivens and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents Warren and Signa Betsinger, his sister Sandra Betsinger, his brother-in-laws David Tetzlaff, Bob Bivens, Bruce Swenson, and sister-in-law Lorna Betsinger.

A man of many talents and interests, Galen found joy in reading and music. He had a passion for refinishing antiques and remodeling homes.  An avid outdoorsman as well, he enjoyed hunting and the outdoors throughout his life. Galen’s artistic side evolved into building various items, drawing sketches or cartoons for his family, and creating and telling stories for his grandchildren and great grandchildren as a way to carry on his teachings.

Galen was an active member of Peace Lutheran Church. His faith provided him with strength and purpose throughout life’s journey.

Those who knew Galen remember him not only for what he did, but for how he made them feel; which was respected, heard and encouraged. He was a treasured colleague in every professional setting he entered, and whose counsel was sought after by many. He lived a noble life by focusing on the principles of kindness, compassion and unconditional love.

Though he has left this world physically, the impact of Galen endures in the lives he touched so deeply, and in the family he loved so completely. We will continue to carry this forward.
