Eugene Arlan Benesh of Eau Claire, WI, passed peacefully on May 16, 2026, at 91 years of age.
Eugene, “Jeep,” was born April 14, 1935, in Eau Claire to Vincent and Birdine Benesh. He is survived by his wife, Diann (Reitter) Benesh; his children, Andrew and Laura (Benesh) Morgan and her husband Ryan; and his grandchildren, Simon and Diana Benesh. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother Karl Vincent Benesh.
Gene graduated from Eau Claire Central High School in 1955, where he played basketball for the Old Abes and discovered his passion for the game. Throughout his life he attended countless basketball and football games for the EC Memorial Old Abes and the UWEC Women’s Basketball teams.
Gene married Diann in June 1979, and they made a wonderful family, raising their kids and spoiling their dogs. He loved his family immensely and cherished time with his grandkids. He and Diann shared a love of Door County, where they traveled each year, staying in Egg Harbor and enjoying fish boils. They also created many memories traveling along the Great Lakes to Bayfield, Grand Marais, and Mackinac Island.
Gene worked across the Chippewa Valley at Armours, Leinenkugel’s, and CVTC; he often reminisced over his time at the latter two. For enjoyment, he gardened and meticulously maintained his yard. He loved decorating for the holidays and was often recognized in the local Leader Telegram for his Christmas light displays.
He will be remembered for his kind, gentle demeanor. His family and friends will always remember his wisdom and humor. He loved his life and was thrilled to share stories of over 9 decades of living and growing up in EC. Gene was the epitome of a family man, and he was so proud of his family.
Gene’s family expresses their extreme gratitude to all the doctors, nurses, and support staff at Mayo Clinic, River Pines Nursing Home, & St. Croix Hospice Care.
There will be a Memorial Service to celebrate Gene’s life at Hulke Family Funeral Home, on Wednesday, June 10, 2026; with visitation starting at 2 PM and Service at 3 PM. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Gene’s memory to the Mayo Clinic Cancer Center, UWEC Women’s Basketball Fast Break Club, or to a local animal rescue.
