Douglas Dean Hillestad passed away peacefully at home on April 10, 2025, at the age of 79. He was born on May 5, 1945, to Sylvia (Fagerland) and Aubrey Hillestad.
Born and raised in Eau Claire, Doug was a lifelong member of Saving Grace Lutheran Church (formerly Grace Lutheran Church). He attended Boyd School, Eau Claire Junior High, Memorial High School (proud Class of 1963), and graduated from UW–Eau Claire. He enlisted and served two years in the Army.
Doug had a long and successful career at 1st Federal Savings and Loan of Eau Claire, where his fairness, warmth, and quick wit left a lasting impression on coworkers and customers alike.
He had the gift of gab and surely never met a stranger. Doug loved a good joke, always had a story to share, and had a well-timed “Uff da” ready when the occasion called for it. He had a passion for classic cars—not just for show, but to drive and enjoy. He was also a proud member of the Oakwood Mall Men’s Precision Walking Team . Doug formed countless friendships, always making sure people knew how important and loved they were by him.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Barbara Hillestad; his son, Mike and his wife Diana Hillestad, his daughter, Dana Hillestad, his stepson Tobin and his wife Meaghan Hudgins; and his grandchildren, Brooke and Cleo Hillestad, Colin Bruley, and Frances Hudgins. He is also survived by his sister, Judy Schrantz of Waukesha; nieces, nephews, cousins, many dear friends, and his cutest dog ever, Rudy.
His passing leaves a big hole in our hearts and a lasting reminder to live with kindness, humor, and joy. In his honor, tell a joke, reach out to someone who’s on your mind, and carry a little of Doug’s warmth into the world.
