Becky Helwig Obituary

Becky Louise (Anderson) Helwig (72) passed away peacefully in her home on Saturday, May 20, 2023 with her husband by her side after a nearly three-year battle with brain cancer.

Becky was born in Eau Claire on March 4, 1951 to Meloy and Wilma (Steinmetz) Anderson, the second of nine children. She attended Immaculate Conception Elementary School and Regis High School (Class of 1969). After attending cosmetology school, she decided that wasn’t for her and began working at the local fabric store which led to a life-long love of sewing. With little formal training, Becky became a talented seamstress who sewed clothes for family and friends, including baby blankets, doll clothes, and bridesmaid dresses for her own and many family weddings.

During her senior year of high school Becky met Gale, the love of her life, and they married on November 6, 1971. She was a stay-at-home mom whose affection for and connection with children led her to open her home as a daycare for many years. She touched the lives of almost all the kids in the neighborhood and beyond.

Once the girls were older, she started sewing in a more professional capacity working on alterations at area dry cleaners. She continued sewing for anyone and everyone in her personal time and was often there to help with any sewing ‘emergencies’.

Becky was a giving soul known for her quiet wit and never forgetting a birthday or special occasion! She was an avid bargain shopper and excellent cook who could whip up something with practically nothing. Above all, she enjoyed the outdoors, loved gardening and camping, and spent as much time as possible with her family.

Becky is survived by her husband of 51 years, Gale, daughters Gwen (Ben) Nemitz and Beth (Nate) Engum; grandchildren Zach, Megan, Brett, Elana, and Owen; great-grandson Brier; siblings Vicki (Pat) LaVelle, Sylvia (Denny) Rau, Renee (Paul) Adler, Neal Anderson, Judy Cole, Danny Anderson, Doug (Maria Elena) Anderson, and Carrie (Davitt Dougherty) Anderson.  Becky is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, and friends. Becky was preceded in death by her parents and sister-in-law Sally Anderson.
