Lawrence F. “Larry” Menard, 74, a board member of Menards Inc., died Tuesday, March 12, 2019 at Azura Memory Care in Eau Claire, surrounded by family and friends.

Lawrence Francis Menard was born March 20, 1944 in Eau Claire to John and Rosemary (Korger) Menard.  Larry came into the world six weeks early, and was said to be so small when he went home that he could fit into a shoebox.

He grew up on his parents’ Town of Wheaton farm, but soon discovered a passion for cars and the “need for speed.”  At age 12, he convinced a beloved uncle to help him sell his 4-H heifer so that he could buy a 1935 slant-back Ford, his first car.  He biked 12 miles to pick it up, all unknown to his parents. Over the years he became active in several car clubs including the Chippewa Valley Corvette Club, the Chippewa Valley Model A Club, and the Indianhead Old Car Club.  He also helped organize the car show benefitting St. James the Greater School and volunteered with programs aimed at helping young drivers.

He graduated from Regis High School in 1962, and served in the Wisconsin National Guard Reserve from 1965 to 1971 during times of great floods on the Mississippi River and civil protests in Madison.

In 1962, he joined his brother, John, at Menards, working first on pole building crews, and then as a top salesman.  He once noted that he probably knew every farm in western Wisconsin from his sales calls over the years.  His skill and passion for sales led him to become the general sales manager for Menards Pole Building Division in 1971.  A few years later, he became the Fridley (Minn.) Menards Yard Manager. “Friendly Fridley” was highly successful under Larry’s leadership, in which he oversaw a growth spurt for the company as the Twin Cities Menards District Manager.

Larry created a hard-working culture in the Twin Cities market before returning to Eau Claire in 1989 as the Menards Operations Manager, supervising stores throughout the Midwest.  Larry was a fearless leader who held this position for the next 20 years, traveling to stores, training team members, hosting sales seminars and attending countless grand openings. After he retired in 2008, Larry, known as the company historian, carried the flag for Menards as he attended seminars and board meetings, and made special appearances, including the Minnesota State Fair.

Larry is survived by his wife, Dawn, whom he married in 2000; son, Lawrence, Eau Claire, and daughter, Angela (Chris) Fahey, Andover, Minn.; step-daughter, Stacy (Barry) Swenson, Cadott, and step-son, Jeff (Katie) Mousel, Elk Mound; siblings, John (Fay), David (Bonnie), and Suzanne, of Eau Claire; Mark (Laurel) of Enumclaw, Wash.; Rosemary (David) Menard-Wallace, Show-Lo, Ariz. and Maggie (Tom) Menard-Mueller, Oak Creek;  11 grandchildren, and many beloved nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Jeanne (Sam) Krause.

Funeral service will take place at 11 am on Monday, March 18, 2019 at St. James the Greater Catholic Church, 2502 11th St, Eau Claire, WI 54703 with Father Tom Krieg officiating.  Visitation will take place at the church on Sunday, March 17, 2019 from 4-8 pm and again on Monday, March 18, 2019 from 9:30 am until the time of service.  Private family committal service with military honors rendered by American Legion Post #53 will take place in the McCombs Cemetery in the Town of Wheaton immediately following the mass.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given in Larry's name to Greater Wisconsin Chapter of the Alzheimer's Association 3313 S. Packerland Dr. De Pere, WI, 54115 or St. James The Greater Catholic Church.

To me Larry was a mentor, father-figure and friend. While working with Larry he taught me so many life lessons that prove true to this day.

Larry always took the time to invest in people. You could see this in actions at our seminars, as team members would come up and talk to him, this larger than life man. He took the time with each and every person making that personal connection. You could just see thier eyes light up with huge smiles as they talked with him. He will be missed, but his life lessons will remain, making all of us that got the chance to learn from him, better for it. Thank you Larry.

After college I was working for my dad at the grain elevator and he basically told me to go find a real job. I was connected to Menards through my college placement office and ended up interviewing with Larry at the Fridley Menards. At the time I really didn't know how good of a salesman he was but after a job offer on the interview I started my Menards career. Through many steps in my time with Menards I always received guidance, training and encouragement from Larry to help myself and our company grow. From 8 stores to over 300 I am blessed to have been a part of Menard history. If not for Larry's mentoring I would not of had this opportunity. I will forever have Larry in my thoughts.

The last goal setting with Larry said it all.....He said "You've been thru some adversity but just said screw it (other words) and kept going". That really let me know what he thought about me and meant and means a lot. My condolences for friends and family.

My condolences to those who were close to Larry. I know I sure enjoyed being around him. He was quite the storyteller and comedian! A rare gem of a person, Larry understood that it was okay to enjoy yourself while doing your job. Menards was not the same without you and this world won't be the same without you. See you on the flip side!

  89. Jeffrey Tucholke March 13, 2019

Thank you for all the opportunities you gave me over the years. Larry, you pushed me to make me better. Although, I didnt always realize it at the time, you only wanted the BEST for me and everyone. Tomorrow is my 35th Anniversary at Menards, and because of your leadership, 35 years hasn't seemed like 35 years. I enjoy going to work every day, I want to do my job like you pushed me to do every day, there is only one way, the right way! My thoughts and prayer go out to the whole Menards family. RIP Larry!

  90. Steve Gossen March 13, 2019

Dawn, Angie, Charlie and the entire Menard Family.
My deepest sympathy in the passing of Larry. I am having a hard time expressing the impact Larry had on my life. From the day he hired me at the age of 16 to the day I retired from Menards, Larry was a major part of my life. Next to my dad, I don’t think anyone has molded me into the person I am today more than Larry. If Larry wasn’t talking sales, he was talking about his family. I will miss Larry and feel very fortunate to have had him in my life. Rest In Peace Larry!

  91. Cathie Manthey March 13, 2019

  94. Rob Jones March 13, 2019

Larry was a Great Individual, he impacted tons of people’s lives. I am PROUD to say I was one of them. He was always quick to ask how I was doing along with my family. I will never forget the first time I met him 24 years ago. I had the pleasure of him being at two of our store openings and always loved to see the Excitement he had at all of them. I will never forget the times that I had the pleasure of spending with him. My thoughts go out to the entire Menard Family.

  95. Peter Brown March 13, 2019

    Dawn, Charlie and Angie,
I don't even know where to start. When I heard Larry passed away my heart broke. So much of who I am today is because of Larry. He was a great leader, motivator, and friend. I owe him so much and I wish I had just one more opportunity to talk with him. I will never forget him and what he did for me. He pushed you until you couldn't be pushed anymore and then he picked you up, dusted you off and turned you into a diamond. I would have done anything for that man. His guidance, leadership, common sense thinking and friendship will be instilled in me forever. I can't say I have ever met a greater man then him. The memories I have with him and Menards will always be a part of my life and I will think back to those memories often. Thank you Larry for everything.

Dawn, Charlie and Angie you have all my sympathies and am so sorry for your lost. My heart hurts for you. May he now rest in peace.

  96. Chuck Velte March 13, 2019

May You Rest In Peace my friend and classmate. I was very saddened to learn of your passing. Nancy and I want to thank you for the wonderful hospitality and warmth you showed to us after our last Class reunion in EC when you invited us out to your place to see the amazing auto collection you were so proud of. You and your brother John along with the rest of your family have so much to be proud of in the success of your business growth. Every time we went into our local Menards store here in Columbia, MO. we would tell the employees of how Larry was our High School classmate and how proud we were of him. Every employee to the person would respond that they really enjoyed him and appreciated how much he respected them. It just seems like yesterday we were standing side by side smiling for the camera in front of your cars. God Speed my friend. May your family heal from your loss and the positive memory of you live on forever. Your friends and Classmates. Chuck Velte and Nancy Moen.

Cover them with your great wings of love, give their weary hearts rest and their minds sound sleep. Lord, lift their eyes so that they may catch a glimpse of eternity, and be comforted by the promise of heaven.
