Mae Josephine “Jo” Tangley, 97, 2402 Ridgeview Drive, Eau Claire passed away Wednesday, September 5, 2018 at Dove Health Care West.

She was born in Jamestown, North Dakota on May 22, 1921 to Peter and Margaret Gretchen (Hatterscheidt) Ballweg.  She was the youngest of six, having one brother and four sisters.

Jo, as she was affectionately known by everyone, attended Buchanan High School in Buchanan, North Dakota graduating in 1939 and later graduated from Minnesota School of Business in Minneapolis, Minnesota.  Missing Jo so, her dad Peter found her a job back in Jamestown after her graduation from business school.  She worked in Jamestown where she met and married W Sterling Tangley of North Adams, Massachusetts on August 5, 1944.  Sterling was a Captain in the Army Air Core stationed in Jamestown.  Later that month Sterling was transferred to Roswell, New Mexico where they lived until 1946.  They then moved to Northfield Minnesota where they owned and operated a grocery store for five years and where their two children Peter and Paula were born.   In 1949 they purchased a Culligan Water Conditioning franchise which they operated out of Ellsworth, Wisconsin.  They would live and raise their family in Ellsworth until moving to Altoona, Wisconsin in 1991.  They were social members at Hillcrest Country Club where they enjoyed dining and camaraderie of friends.  They also owned a cabin on Balsam Lake in Wisconsin, where again, they had many friends and great times.  Sterling died in 2001 at which time Jo moved to Eau Claire.

Jo left many friends in Ellsworth, but made many new friends in Altoona and Eau Claire.   She was an avid bridge player and sought by many as a partner.

She is survived by two children, Peter (Karol) Tangley Mesa, AZ, Paula (Dale) Iverson Prescott, WI; five grandchildren, Bret (Tonja) Tangley Eau Claire, WI, Sonja (Justin) Toenjes Gilbert, AZ, Sara (Michael) Georgeson St Paul, MN, Toby Iverson St Anthony, MN and Jed Iverson St Paul, MN; and eleven great grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Alfred Ballweg; and four sisters, Helen Kordahl, Agnus Ross, Margaret Budd and Sister Alice Ballweg.

My condolences to all of Jo's family. I remember Jo and Sterling as wonderful neighbors in Ellsworth. Sterling often stood on his head for a laugh and Jo was always cheerful. Jo and my Mother took me to Stout when I started college. She helped me get settled into my dorm room. All great memories of a dear couple.
