Philip J. Machmeier
Send Condolence

Philip Jon Machmeier, 64, passed away to be with our Lord, on Monday, September 3, 2018, at Dove Healthcare-West in Eau Claire, Wisconsin with his wife, Deb by his side.

He was born to Roger and Joretta Machmeier on July 12, 1954 at the Swedish Hospital in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Philip Machmeier grew up playing the tuba in the public schools of Minnesota before receiving a music scholarship to Bemidji State College.  While attending BSC, he was offered the opportunity to study with tuba legend, Tommy Johnson, at the University of Southern California.  He transferred to USC and later graduated in 1977 with a degree in instrumental music education.  During his time at USC, in addition to his studies with Tommy Johnson, he performed in the Wind Ensemble, the USC Symphony Orchestra, and the USC Tuba Ensemble.  After graduation, Philip taught instrumental music (both winds and strings) for the fourth, fifth, and sixth grades in the Irvine Unified School District in California, as well as doing additional work at the high school level.  Out of the 18 instruments he played, tuba was his first love, an instrument that inspired him to compose and arrange music.

Since moving to the Eau Claire area, Philip has given special presentations for the students of the UWEC Healthcare Administration class (HCAD) and has presented a master class for the UWEC tuba and euphonium studio.  He continued to be an active arranger of instrumental music.  The book, 100 Chorales by J.S. Bach, Arranged for Tubas by Philip Machmeier was published in 2017.

For many years, Philip has reached out to hundreds of people sending out his “Daily Inspiration” through email.  He selected a bible verse that inspired him and would spread God’s Word each day.

On May 7, 2011, Philip married Deb Mayer at Peace Church.  A chance meeting changed their lives forever.  They were kindred spirits and they were the love of each other’s lives.

Philip is survived by his wife, Deb, father, Roger (Marsie), brother, Bruce (Linda), sister, Ann, nephews, Peter and William, nieces, Elizabeth and Samantha, many aunts, uncles and cousins, his in-laws, Nancy Mayer, Mary Dicke, Dan (Donna) Mayer, and Carol (Mike) Pickerign.  He is also, survived by his “Special Family”, Jodi Miller and her daughter, MiJay, Dual Spurlock, and Dan Stormoen and also, his dear friends, Judy Rumphol who he referred to as “my people, Judy” and Maryann McNamara, a long time teaching colleague.

He is preceded in death by his mother, Joretta (2012), his grandparents, Rufus and Emma Machmeier and Paul and Minnie Gibson, his aunt, Judy Whelan (who held a special place in his heart), Deb’s parents, Ken and Margaret Mayer, and brother-in-law, Rick Mayer.

A Memorial service will take place at 11 am on Saturday, September 8, 2018 at Peace Lutheran Church, 501 E. Fillmore Avenue, Eau Claire, WI 54701 with Pastor Mark Schulz officiating.  Memorial visitation will take place at the church Saturday morning from 9 am until the time of service and will continue after the service at the church during a luncheon. Inurnment will take place at a later date in the Oak Park Cemetery in Mondovi, WI.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Deb Machmeier, to be allocated at a later date.

  7. Maryann McNamara September 4, 2018

Dear Deb and Machmeier Family, I am so sorry for your loss of Philip. Philip was a dear friend and colleague who I respected for his music talent, tenacity, honesty, and loving nature. But most of all I appreciated his friendship and sense of humor. He fought the long fight but finally is whole again and with the Lord. I imagine he is in heaven serenading again with his tuba. RIP to my dear friend Philip. He will always be in my thoughts and prayers. My deepest condolences, Maryann McNamara
