Arlene O. Ehlert
Send Condolence

Arlene O. Ehlert, 91 of Eau Cliare, passed away peacefully Tuesday, July 24, 2018, at Dove Healthcare West.

She was born November 6, 1926 in the town of Nelson, the daughter of Albert and Olga (Raaum) Wibel. After graduating from Mondovi High School, she and her best friend Doris were hired at a defense plant in Racine, Wisconsin. The “400” train was their mode of transportation to their jobs, where they were inspectors of small metal parts for the military. They would leave the depot in Eau Claire on Sundays and return on the weekends. She later worked at the Mondovi Canning Factory, which is where she met her future husband. She married Dick Ehlert on January 10, 1947 at the Methodist Church in Mondovi.

She was known for her sense of humor and always enjoyed a good laugh. She enjoyed cooking, baking, going for walks, and caring for her grandchildren.

Arlene had a very strong faith, which especially sustained her after suffering a stroke in 1999. Despite spending the rest of her life confined to a wheelchair, she never complained about it. She continued to brighten other people’s lives and to cheer them up when they were feeling down, always putting others first.

She is survived by her son, David (Mary) Ehlert; daughters, Diane Wyss, Kris Mattison, Karen Ehlert. She is further survived by 6 grandchildren, Rachelle, Brian, Justin, Ian, Cody and Nikki; 4 great-grandchildren, Logan, Makayla, Daniel, and Leah; 1 sister Violet Goss; 2 brothers, Larry and Ronnie Wibel; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Dick (1986); brothers, Clifford, Roger, Richard, Kenneth; sister, Hazel Hayden.

The family wishes to express our sincere appreciation for the care and concern shown to Arlene and family by the staff during her stay at the Dove West: Reflections Unit.

I remember the wonderful times I had at the Ehlert family reunions in Mondovi. Aunt Arlene was a kind and gentle person and I liked her so much. I remember the times my family visited at your home in Eau Claire and also the times your family came to see us in Rockford. Karen, thanks so much for staying in touch with me the past several years and keeping me updated on how your mom was doing. It meant so much to me to get to talk to her on the phone this past year one day when you were visiting her. It was so good to be able to hear her voice again after so many years.

I have not seen my aunt since the late 50s. However, I remember her as very sweet, kind, and loving to everyone. At Grandma's, I mainly hung out with my cousin David. It had to have been so very tough when my Uncle Dick died all those years ago. Aunt Arlene was left to care for her four children. I'd love to hear from my cousins if they have the time and if they remember me. Living in Arizona, we don't get back to the Midwest anymore. I was so blessed to be related to such a great aunt as Arlene Ehlert.

I never met your mother Arlene, however I can only imagine she was a wonderful woman. When I was fourteen years old I came to Eau Claire to babysit David and Diane (who was a baby) while your mother was hospitalized and your dad went to work. During that time I stayed with my aunt and uncle who lived next door. Please accept my sincere sympathy. May God Bless you all.

We played together when we were little on Farwell Street, and I remember your family. (We lived on the back of the apartment). Sorry to hear of the passing of your mother. I own the Amber Inn, three blocks from that home, for the last 37 years.
