Larry John Rasmussen, age 73 of Eau Claire was called home to the loving arms of Christ on Tuesday, May 29, 2018 at the Heatherwood  Assisted Living and Memory Care after a long struggle with Alzheimer’s dementia.

Larry was born in Eau Claire on April 17, 1945 to John and Inez (Aune) Rasmussen.  He lived his entire life in Eau Claire graduating from Memorial High School in 1963.  He married Sharron Bergh on June 3, 1967 and graduated from CVTC with an associate’s degree in mechanical design technology that same month.

He was hired in December 1967 as an electrical designer by Northern States Power Company and continued with XCEL Energy until his retirement on September 1, 2001. Larry joined the National Guard as an Army Reservist in May of 1967.  He completed basic training as a construction machine operator at Ft. Leonard Wood, Missouri.  He was honorably discharged from the Army in March of 1973 and from the National Guard in December of 1974.

Larry loved the outdoors; golfing, deer and grouse hunting and walleye fishing in Canada and at Upper Long Lake.  His real passion, however, was racing, showing and raising homing pigeons; a hobby he started as a young boy.  He also liked to do some traveling, taking a cruise/tour to Alaska, visiting his brother Dennis in Seattle, Washington and touring the Olympic Peninsula, taking a six week car/camping trip to California and back and enjoying all the major sights along the way.  He also enjoyed a little hot air balloon adventure.  He spent two weeks every summer at a cabin on Upper Long Lake for over 30 years.  He did all these things with the family he loved.

Larry had a great heart for family, especially his grandchildren and a good sense of humor even towards the end.  As his family, our peace comes from knowing Larry’s faith never wavered and his place is now with God and loved ones who have gone before him.

He was preceded in death by both sets of grandparents Emil and Palma Rasmussen and Pastor O.C. and Inez Aune, his father John I. Rasmussen and daughter Kristy A. Rasmussen.  Larry is survived by his wife Sharron, mother Inez Rasmussen of Eau Claire, daughter Stephanie (David) Dewitz and two grandchildren Chandra and Kyle Dewitz all of Mosinee, brothers David (Dianne) Rasmussen of Fall Creek and Dennis (Darleen) Rasmussen of Seattle, five nieces and one nephew.

A heartfelt thanks to the very caring staff at BeeHive Homes, Heatherwood Memory Care and Heartland Hospice. A personal thank you to Sherry Hall of Visiting Angels whom Larry had a special bond.

Friends and family are welcome to a celebration of Larry’s life at Hulke Family Funeral Home, 3209 Rudolph Road in Eau Claire at 11 am on Friday, June 8, 2018 with Pastor Brian Quade of Bethesda Lutheran Brethren Church in Eau Claire officiating.  Memorial visitation will take place at the funeral home on Friday morning from 9 am until the time of service. Dear Stephanie and Family. I am so sorry to hear of your father's passing. I did have the pleasure of meeting him on a couple of occasions and we even discussed the pigeons when he stopped at the veterinary clinic I worked at. He was a very kind person. My thoughts are with you at this difficult time.

Cousin Larry will be missed by so many friends and family. I remember summers and Christmas visits to Wisconsin with my Aune family. When we would stay at Aunt Ina's house, I enjoyed listening to boxing and baseball with Larry in his room in the basement. Also enjoyed watching the pigeons in the back yard and hearing about how he and Uncle John would take them out for racing. Rest in peace Larry!
