Gladys Beverly Kruckman, 101, of Eau Claire died Monday, April 9th at Heatherwood Assisted Living & Memory Care.  She was born March 31, 1917, the daughter of Robert W. Steele and Gladys C. (Hunter) Steele in Victoria, B.C., Canada.  Early in her life, her family moved several times due to her father’s professional baseball career.  In 1927 her family settled in Burlington, WI where she graduated from high school in 1935.  It was there that she met and married Robert A. Kruckman on June 24, 1938.

A series of job-related moves took the couple through Iowa and Wisconsin where their three children were born.  After working 13 years for J.C. Penney, she later earned a bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education in 1969 (at age 52) from UW Eau Claire.  She taught in the Bloomer School District until her husband was transferred to Minnesota where she was substitute teacher in the Roseville and Mounds View school districts.  When her husband retired in 1983, they returned to Eau Claire where she lived the remainder of her years.

She is survived by three children, son Robert (Kathleen) Kruckman of Eau Claire, daughter Judy Kruckman of Madison, and son Kris (Kay) Kruckman of Eau Claire; granddaughters Mary (Brett) Drehmel, Christina (Bandi) Henke, and Amy (Cory) Sisk; grandson Matt Seyller; great-grandsons Nathan (Jennalee) Odom, Gunnar Henke, Jamison Henke, Keason Seyller; great-granddaughter Olivia Sisk; as well as many nieces and nephews.

She was an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church and enjoyed her many friends there.   Her numerous volunteer activities included the Trinity Quilting and Friendship groups and AARP, where she served as local chapter secretary.  Her Irish-Canadian heritage was a great source of pride for her.  She always aspired to live to 100 years of age like her Grandmother Priscilla, who was born in Ireland on St. Patrick’s Day. She loved spending time with family, playing golf, beating everyone at cribbage, and tending to her backyard birds.  She was a selfless, giving, class act until the end.  Her friendly and pleasant disposition made her well-liked by all.

She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband Robert in 1992, an infant brother, her sisters Claire Subrod and Laraine (Western) Gammel, and grandsons Michael Kruckman and Reece Severson.

Special thanks to caregivers that went above and beyond in providing loving care for Bev in her final years, and appreciation to St. Croix Hospice.

Very sorry for the loss of your mother. As neighbors, we were all so busy raising families and working, we didn't spend much time getting to know each other. However, when we both went to quilting I really enjoyed her company. Sincerely, Ruth & Bruce Eastenson
