Donald E. Metcalf, 99, of Eau Claire and La Crosse, passed away peacefully on February 8, 2018 with his family at his side.

Donald was born on January 12, 1919 in Radisson, Wisconsin to Amy (Swenson) and Roy Metcalf.  He graduated from Whitehall High School in 1937.  He enlisted in the Army on January 12, 1942 where he served in the Army Combat Corps of Engineers.  His entire military career was spent serving on the front lines during World War II, specifically the front lines of North Africa and Italy.

Upon returning from WWII, he met and married Henrietta Bergen.  They were married on January 26, 1946.  They were happily married until her death on December 6, 1980.

He worked for Northern States Power Company (NSP) in Eau Claire.  He was transferred to La Crosse for a time, but returned to Eau Claire to finish out his career with NSP where he enjoyed many more years representing Reddy Kilowatt and working with wonderful co-workers and friends.  He retired at the age of 63.

Donald married Patricia Gorton Lavalle on December 11, 1982.  In retirement they pursued their mutual interests of golf, travelling throughout Wisconsin visiting places and people, and enjoying watching their favorite sports teams—Badgers for him and Notre Dame for her.

Donald is preceded in death by his parents and 7 siblings, his wives, and son-in-law, Ron Lee.

He is survived by his 3 daughters: Donetta Lee, Kathy (Jon) Fruh, Nancy (Bob) Milisch, and his favorite son, Dan (Lori) Lavalle; 5 grandchildren:  Jenny (Derek) Carlson, Matt (Liv Svanoe) Lee, Amy (Nate) Keller, JP (Carrie) Tanner, Jessica (Jeff) Loken; and numerous great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

We have the best of memories of growing up—of going fishing, playing softball, gardening, and attending family vacations and get-togethers.  Anyone who knew him, knew of his expertise in wood-working and his love of letter writing.  We were truly blessed.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Mayo Clinic Franciscan Healthcare- Hospice, 620 S. 11th Street, La Crosse, WI 54601.

The family sends a special thank you to the staff of Springbrook Assisted Living and Mayo Clinic Franciscan Healthcare- Hospice for their excellent care.

I was saddened to learn of your father’s death. As a veteran, I have a great appreciation for his military service during WW II. As a member of the Greatest Generation, he truly fought to preserve the freedoms we enjoy today. You have my deepest sympathy.
