Stanley Shook Obituary

Stanley (Stan) Edward Shook passed away at Dimensions Living in Eau Claire, WI on May 8, 2026, at 95 years old, lovingly surrounded by his family.

Stan was born to Calista and Lyle Shook on June 27, 1930 in Greene, IA. He was the first of five children.

Growing up during the depression brought many challenges and opportunities. He talked often about working as a “pin setter” in a bowling alley and working at a dairy farm starting at 8 years old. He had many jobs to help the family and in his late teen years began working with his dad in Shook and Son Construction.

The Korean War changed his path. He first enlisted in the Marine Corps for a year, was discharged and then was drafted. He was very proud to be a Marine, and of the fact that he obtained the rank of Second Lieutenant without benefit of a college degree. After his discharge, he used the GI bill to attend the University of Iowa-Iowa City and obtained his Civil Engineering Degree. He often said that the Marines Corps and the GI bill completely changed his life.

His life really began while attending church, he noticed Virginia (Ginny) Shorman. They were joined in marriage on September 9, 1956, at the First Presbyterian Church in Greene, IA. The family quickly expanded with four kids born in five years; Janelle Kae, Randal Edward, Steven Lee and Linda Leigh. They, along with a variety of dogs, cats, chickens etc. made for a wonderfully busy and happy time.

Stan began his professional career working for the Highway Commission in Eau Claire, WI. From there he moved on to become the General Manager of Lakehead Constructors in Superior, WI. The family enjoyed living in Superior and eventually moved on the lake in Lake Nebagamon, WI, a dream for Stan. He was deeply involved in the community, serving in numerous civic roles including Snowmobile Club President, Village President, and many others in between.

In retirement, the first thing he did was fulfill his lifelong dream of obtaining his pilot's license. Stan and Ginny enjoyed many years as snowbirds at Adobe Wells development in McAllen, TX. They loved to golf and made many wonderful friends there. He enjoyed golfing and fishing whole-heartedly through his 95th year.

Stan was preceded in death by wife Ginny, his parents Calista and Lyle, brothers Terrance and Lee, sister Clara Mae and daughter Linda.

He is survived by his brother Daryl (Julie) Shook; children Janelle (Jeffrey) Laube, Randal (Sheila) Shook, Steven (Marina) Shook; grandchildren Lee McPherson, Sarah (Ross) Parks, Kaitlyn (Abraham) Ward, Jenna (Per) Nestingen, Joseph (Patrick) O’Donnell, John (Monica) Shook, Mikaelah (Mitchell) Vander Baan, Ryan (Evanthia) Shook, Conor Shook, Benjamin (Lindsey) Laube and great grandchildren Lee, Stanley and Eugene McPherson, William, Margo and Alva Parks, Ezekiel Ward, Svea and Berit Nestingen, Keiran O’Donnell, Trevelyan, Finnegan and Sullivan Shook, Brooks, Rafe, Quinn and Chase Vander Baan. He was also elated to learn of great grandson #18 arriving in August. And beloved nieces and nephews.

The family would like to thank Interim Hospice and Dimensions Living for their care and support during these last few months.
