Glen C. Volkman, 85, of Eau Claire, WI (and more recently Verona, WI), died Monday, March 25, 2024, at Maplewood Health Center in Sauk City, WI.
He was born June 3,1938, in Bensenville, IL, the son of Clarence and Doris (Foerster) Volkman. He graduated from Fenton High School (Bensenville, IL). He was a caddy at Twin Orchard Golf Course (Prairie View, IL) during high school, and earned an Evans Scholarship to attend the University of Wisconsin – Madison.
At the end of his sophomore year, he enlisted in the United States Army (1958 – 1961) as a missile technician with the Southern European Task Force in Vicenza, Italy.
Glen returned to the University of Wisconsin – Madison, and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree, with further education at Concordia – River Forest in elementary education.
Glen was a 3 – 4 th grade teacher at Immanuel Lutheran (Hillside, IL). He also worked for Menards, Wisconsin Plumbing Supply, and as a teacher’s aide at Northwoods School in Eau Claire.
For over 40 years, Glen was a boys and girls high school basketball official in Illinois and Wisconsin. While in Wisconsin, he officiated over 1400 games, including 8 WIAA State Tournament games.
A lifelong Christian, he was a faithful member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church and Peace Lutheran, both in Eau Claire.
Glen was also a die-hard Wisconsin Badgers fan, including having football season tickets for 30 years. He was a loud enthusiast while watching games, and voiced his opinion when he felt that a bad call was made.
Glen is survived by his wife of 56 years, Ruth, son Fred (significant other Wendy Mortimore), daughter Wendy (Ben Klaas); grandchildren Anna, Peter, Clare Volkman, and Carson, Piper Klaas; brother, Gene (Karen) Volkman; nieces and nephews Doris, Janet, David, Sarah, John, Steven, Hannah, Kristin, Karl and Kara. Glen was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Ken.
Funeral service for Glen will take place at 11 am on Thursday, April 4, 2024 at Peace Church, 501 E. Fillmore Avenue, Eau Claire, WI 54701 with Pastor Mark Schulz officiating. Visitation will take place on Wednesday, April 3, 2024 at Hulke Family Funeral Home from 4-7 pm and on Thursday at the church from 10 am until the time of service. Burial with military honors will take place later that day at 2 pm at Rest Haven Cemetery in the Town of Washington.
