Lucas Dowell, 35, of Eau Claire, died peacefully on August 1, 2018, at the family home of Jennifer and Ken Blietz in New Richmond, WI, with his family at his side. Luke is finally at peace after a 20 year battle with Huntington’s Disease.  He will remain in our hearts and minds forever.

Luke, son of John and Vicki Dowell, was born on February 8, 1983, in Eau Claire.  He attended school in the Eau Claire School District prior to juvenile onset of Huntington’s disease as a teenager.  The debilitating symptoms of HD drastically affected Luke physically, mentally, and emotionally. Ultimately, it cost him his precious independence and a future that was once filled with hopes and dreams.

From an early age, Luke had a love of sports.  Baseball was his first love where he won the Hit, Run, and Throw Contest numerous times. In Little League he had a reputation for throwing the ball as fast as anyone in the city.  He loved playing travel hockey and being a part of his hockey family.

Luke enjoyed time spent at the cabin on Lake Holcombe fishing and tubing with his brother. He especially loved time spent around the campfire where his infectious laugh could be heard and appreciated by family and friends.

He took pride in watching over his younger brother and his friends, who knew they could always look to him for guidance.

Luke will be remembered for his determination and interminable drive shared with his sensitivity and compassion for others. His easy going and fun-loving spirit was pervasive in his healthy years.  Those traits were replaced with stubbornness and a willingness to endure all that HD took from him without complaint as the disease progressed.

Luke is survived by his mother Vicki, brother Jake (Carly), niece Ellie, and nephew Henry. Luke is joined in heaven with his father John who also died of Huntington’s disease.

We would like to thank Jennifer Blietz for her willingness to move Luke into her home when he needed intensive care.  Jennifer was Luke’s angel here on earth. He spent nearly three years with her and husband Ken in New Richmond. Jennifer’s love and endless care extended Luke’s life beyond expectations, and words cannot express our gratitude.  Jennifer was the only person who could make Luke laugh!

Thank you to the nurses at Interim Healthcare Hospice in New Richmond, WI, for their kind and supportive care for Luke when the end was near.

In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made to Huntington’s Disease Society of America (HDSA) in Luke’s name.

Visitation will take place at St. John's Lutheran Church, 1804 Highland Avenue, Eau Claire, WI 54701 on Thursday evening, August 16, 2018, from 4-7 pm and again Friday morning at the church an hour prior to the service. Memorial services will take place at 10:30 am on Friday, August 17, 2018, at St. John's Lutheran Church with Pastor Christine Emerson officiating.  Inurment will take place in Lakeview Cemetery in Eau Claire at a later date.

We are so sorry for the loss of your son and brother Luke. Thank you for sharing all of Luke's wonderful qualities. I was saddened to hear the news of Luke’s passing. I remember Luke as a silly and competitive kid growing up. He also had a toughness that was unmatched. He was one of the skinniest kids on the football field but could hit like a truck. I hope Vikki and Jake can find peace knowing that his battle is over and that he is happy in heaven.

Although you don't know me, I just wanted to send my deepest sympathy and hugs. HD is the worst thing that can happen to anyone, especially a child. There are so many of us in the HD community who cry each time we hear of another angel getting their wings.

  8. Jackie Reynolds August 13, 2018

My son Jake and I had the opportunity to meet your loving family at a Wisconsin HD Conference. Even with this horrible disease it amazing the gifts we receive from our loved ones who are dealing with HD. They give us the gifts on love, compassion, kindness and courage even in the darkest of days. Our sympathies to all who had the good fortune of being a part of Lucas's life. The Charlie Reynolds Family.
